Social media has certainly grown leaps and bounds over the last three years and many local and state agencies are embracing it and using it to stay connected to their community. It makes me wish the town I live in used social media. I think it would better connect me and my family to the town in which we live. Although every entity in our town has its own separate web presence, I believe using social media could pull it altogether and make my life easier.
When I first moved to my town I was online looking for various things; doctors in the area, sports teams, girl scout troups, 24 hour pharmacy’s, town officials, town events, camps for the kids, county orchestra’s, swim teams, fencing classes, etc, etc. It took a ridiculous amount of time searching the web and asking other parents and residents about all these things. I can’t help but think this could have been so much easier if my town used social media and had a social network of some sort that addressed all this stuff.
I think having a social network of some sort that encompassed every facet of what’s in that town could be a great benefit to residents. With the RSS, dragging in information from other town sources is be a breeze., maintaining a calendar is simple and effective and this might help people become more involved in their community if they know what the heck is going on. Many times people are inactive because they are unaware of what is going on in their town, but having a social network that included information about town meetings and school meetings and functions and more, would give people the opportunity to participate.
So, I wish my town used social media because I would love to have a one stop shop to all these related to the town in which I reside to become more involved and knowledgeable about the things going on around town.
